With the participation of Brandeis University, Casa Guatemala held the first ever Student Leadership Conference in Waltham for Latino students. 20 students gave up their Saturdays to visit the Brandeis campus in South Waltham and participate in a variety of college student-led workshops.
The theme of the event, Understand the Past, Comprehend the Present and Transform the Future, educated students on the history of Latin America and Latino immigration to the United States. It challenged the students to use an understanding of their history to make positive change for the community they live in.
Casa Guatemala brought 25 middle school students from Waltham and Framingham to visit the campus of Boston College where they spent a day full of activities and discussions with the student group Sankofa. Sankofa is young men's organization that emphasizes service to the community.
While on campus, students were given the opportunity to learn about college from other minority students and shadow them during a typical weekend day on a college campus. The students played played basketball in the school's student gym and were given the experience of a lifetime when they were allowed to play soccer in Boston College's 40,000 seat Alumni Stadium, home of the Boston College Football team and frequent site of many ESPN and ABC national telecasts.
